We spend a couple of hours chitchatting outside our hotel. We realized that the south Goa doesn't do late night party :D After dinner we came back to the hotel at 12 in the night. We were surprised when the waiter approached us to take the last order at 10.30. The peace of mind you get visiting the south Goa was nowhere comparable to anything I had experienced so far. But the fort offers awesome view of the sea which immediately conjures scenes to mind from Dil Chahta Hai. The live karaoke added spark to the night. The fort is run-down and there's hardly anything left of what used to exist. Unlike the mad crowd in the north, the people here were in their mid 30's and were accompanied by the family. The closest beach was just 700 meters so we decided to have dinner at a shack. Its walls follow the natural slopes and drops of the peninsula. The fort is the only laterite fort in the village of Chapora. This was to protect their Northern boundary from incursions made by the Maharaja of Sawantwadi, who ruled over Pernem, on the opposite bank of the Chapora River. They built the Chapora fort over the remains of an old military outpost which belonged to the previous ruler, Sultan Adil Shah. The fort was held by the Portuguese from 1543. This was due to the fact that it was once the stronghold of the Sultanate of Bijapur. The village of Chapora and the fort, get their name from ‘Shahapura’ or, ‘the town of the Shah’. The Chapora fort is located in the Bardez taluka and is easily accessible from the market town of Mapusa.
